There’s all this rave around affirmations but what really are affirmations?
Affirmations are nothing more than statements that you tell yourself to be true. It is the act of affirming something to be true.
This could range from making a statement that “Cold Stone has the best ice cream.” to “I am capable of doing anything I put my mind to.”
One statement is an opinion about ice cream and the other statement is something you’re using to inspire yourself. But what do they have in common?
The one thing they have in common is that you’re affirming those things to be true.
Okay, so what is the point of using affirmations?
Well, your belief system has a lot to do with where you are today, and if you have the desire for some sort of change in your life, the purpose of affirmations is to change your mindset. Because change always starts from within.
So the simple answer to your question is affirmations work by you repeating positive statements with the intention of attracting or manifesting that desire.
Tip: There is a difference between attracting and manifesting
If you’re here chances are you’ve already heard about the law of attraction and manifestation. But something I need to clear up is that while these two things may be similar, they are not the same.
Manifesting is to quite literally bring something about. Attracting something to you is like drawing in/pulling something towards you almost like a magnet.
Manifesting is directly related to your actions and attracting/the law of attraction is directly related to your mindset and frequency.
Remember they can be similar and go hand and hand but they are NOT the same.
I will highlight the differences by using examples.
You can attract a boyfriend by using the law of attraction but you cannot technically manifest a boyfriend because the only way for you to bring another human about is by becoming pregnant.
So you can manifest a pregnancy but you cannot technically manifest a boyfriend. Then, why do we use this term like this?
Honestly, I don’t know. It’s probably the same reason why we say “I’m OCD” even though it’s technically wrong because you can’t be a disorder.
Just go with it.
Another example can deal with finances.
You can attract a good job opportunity but you cannot technically manifest a job because to do so would mean you would be creating a job.
However, you can manifest more money into your life because you would be creating new sources of income through your actions.

So now that you know what affirmations are, let’s get into how to make affirmations work faster.
1. Be Specific And Don’t Overdo Them
If I were to tell you I wanted to be a doctor, a lawyer, a cashier, an astronaut, and a waitress what would you tell me?
Hopefully, you would tell me something along the lines of, “Lena, you’re doing way too much. You need to focus on one thing at a time.”
So that’s the same advice to you, my friend. It is totally okay to strive for many wonderful things in life, but it is not okay to tackle them all at once because
- You’re going to get overwhelmed
- You’re more likely to quit that way
Pick your top 3 most important goals to you right now in your life, and tackle one goal one step at a time.
Now some of you may be wondering, but how do I know which ones to pick when they’re all important to me?
My answer to that is another question.
Which ones can you live without right now and which ones can’t you live without? Which ones are directly affecting your progress right now and which ones can be tackled in the next 6 months?
This was something I also had to do myself.
About 12 months ago I had a laundry list of things I wanted to accomplish.
That list included:
- Get a boyfriend
- Grow my blog
- Get better at SEO
- Build better relationships with my family
- Learn freelance writing
- Purchase my first home
- Build my savings
- Decrease my debt
- Travel to another country
- Help a friend get out of a messed-up situation
- Make $10,000 a month
As you can imagine, that is a lot for one person to accomplish in 12 months.
And you may be reading that and thinking “duh” but it’s easier to overload yourself with a ton of goals than you think it is (especially when you keep seeing people on social media accomplishing all of their goals).
While all of those goals were (and still are) very important to me, I had to let a lot of them take the back burner because the very thing that I said would happen did.
I got burned out, and overwhelmed, and I wound up feeling the most unmotivated that I had ever felt before.
I sat down and decided which ones could stay and which goals had to wait. Now my new list consists of
- Grow my blog
- Build better relationships with my family
- Decrease my debt
That doesn’t mean that the rest of my goals aren’t important to me. It just means I am now better prioritized and more likely to reach my goals and still enjoy my life in the process.
Word to the wise: Shorten that list of goals and watch how fast you’ll get there. Once you accomplish those goals, then you can move on to the next.

2. Use Your Affirmations Daily
A common mistake people make is that they don’t use affirmations consistently. You must use affirmations daily if you want to reach your goals faster.
Why?
Because if you half-ass your technique then your results will either come out half-assed or take forever to accomplish.
Think about if a doctor prescribed you medicine to take once a day and you decided you’re only going to take it every 2 days. What do you think will happen?
Yeah, you may eventually heal, but it wouldn’t be as fast as if you took your medicine daily. You want to treat affirmations the same way.
I’m not saying that affirmations are your medicine, but they are a way to keep your goals at the front of your mind and keep your head in the right space.
The more choppy you choose to be, the more choppy your results will be. I don’t make the rules.
3. Stay Committed And Consistent
Another mistake people make is that they give up. Whatever you do, do not give up. Let me say that again.
Whatever you do, do not give up. Keep going, even when you can’t see a way.
Remember how getting a boyfriend was on my list of goals for the year? Well, it got removed because I actually wound up accomplishing that goal sooner than I expected!
In late 2022 I decided I wanted a boyfriend. I made a vision board, visualized myself with my boyfriend, and said my affirmations.
In case you were wondering, the affirmations I would use were:
- “I am so grateful I have a partner who loves me”
- “I am so grateful I met the love of my life”
- “I leave myself open to all opportunities to meet my boyfriend”
At the time, I knew what affirmations were but I was still skeptical, so I would use them but only here and there.
As you can imagine, I did not meet my boyfriend in 2022.
The next year rolls around and we’re 3 months into 2023, still no boyfriend. But I refused to give up. As a matter of fact, I decided I was going to amp it up, so I started saying at least one of those affirmations every single day even if it was under my breath.
3 months later I met him in a bookstore. (I actually met him while I was finding the best manifestation books for beginners! Ironic huh?)
You cannot give up my friend. It is crucial that you stay the course.
It is one thing if you decide that the goal you’re reaching for isn’t as much of a priority as you thought it was. But it’s another thing to just give up.
Giving up is the only way to guarantee failure.
And I also have to be honest about something. Some things that take time my friend.
I would be a liar to sit here and tell you that you can speed up any goal of yours because some things have to come when they’re supposed to come.
The rule of thumb is: If the goal involves someone else, then chances are something is bound to be out of your control. If the goal solely involves you, you can absolutely manifest that goal faster by using these 5 steps to make your affirmations work faster.
4. Say Your Affirmations Out Loud
It’s not a must to say your affirmations out loud but if you want to learn how to make affirmations work faster then you should say them out loud.
According to The Mindful Steward, saying your affirmations out loud can have more of a powerful effect because your subconscious mind can hear them out loud which in turn makes the experience feel more real to your mind and body.
When it starts to feel more real, you are officially getting onto the frequency of that desire.
The longer you stay on the frequency the more likely and faster you will attract it (or the opportunity) to you.
Tip: Despite contrary belief, you don’t have to say your affirmations in the mirror each time. That’s one of the beautiful things about affirmations is that you can say them anywhere at anytime!
5. Visualize Before, During, Or After Your Affirmations
Last but not least, you must visualize. This is a step many people think they can skip but I am here to tell you, you can but you shouldn’t.
Visualization is a powerful tool that has helped many people turn their desires into reality. It works by imagining your desire in the present tense involving all 5 senses, or as many as you can.
For example, let’s say your goal is to travel to Switzerland for a ski trip and you want to visualize yourself arriving at your Airbnb in Switzerland. You want to get into the details of:
- How cold it is
- Your snow boots on the front porch opening up the front door
- Touring the awesome Airbnb you booked
- Hearing your family/friends in the background beaming about how nice the house is
- Figuring out which room is yours
- Admiring how beautiful the snow is
- Enjoying the smell of the freshly cleaned house
You don’t have to literally visualize all of these things at once but the goal is to visualize specifics that come with your desire to get all of your senses engaged.
The more you practice this the better you’ll get at it. Plus it’s the most fun part of manifesting!
How does this make affirmations work faster?
As you continue to visualize you will start to notice yourself feeling like you already have it, which will then start to spark feelings of motivation which will then lead to action.
Remember, manifestation cannot happen if you don’t take action. It’s just the truth. And the best way to make that happen faster is to continually remind yourself of your goals and get on the frequency of having them right now so you can:
- attract more opportunities to have your desire
- motivate yourself to take daily actions (even if it’s small)

Why Affirmations Aren’t Working For You?
There could be a few reasons why affirmations may not be working for you
1. You’re Not Being Consistent
Let’s go back to the medicine scenario, if a doctor prescribed you anti-anxiety medicine but you only took it here and there do you think the effects would be the same as if you took them consistently?
The same thing applies to affirmations, the same thing applies to a lot of things actually but that’s for another article.
The bottom line is: in order to see results from your affirmations you have to do them consistently for at least a few weeks, optimally 90 days.
And the good thing about affirmations is that they’re free and easy to use!
So, there’s really no excuse as to why you can’t commit to saying something positive to strengthen your mindset and attract the things you want in life.
2. You Don’t Believe Your Affirmations Will Work
Much like being consistent is a key role in your affirmations working, so is your belief system. If you believe it won’t work then it won’t. It’s as simple as that
And that goes for anything. What you believe has a huge impact on your actions and attitude and your overall life.
Think about someone you know who always gets in their own way and talks themselves out of things that they know they’re fully capable of doing.
We all know someone like that, hell it may even be you.
When this happens there is some limiting belief in their mind that is stopping them, even though they know they are fully capable of doing said task.
That may be them telling themselves things like “I’ll look stupid” or “I’m not good enough to do that”. These types of thoughts get in the way and fuel even more negative thoughts that are holding them back.
That is a perfect scenario of how what you believe can greatly hinder you. Believing negative concepts that have 0 purpose can and will greatly hinder you if you let it.

There is still good news though, you can change this!
Now will it be easy? No. But most things that are good aren’t easy at first, and that’s okay because it will be worth it.
3. You’re Not Taking Any Action
A huge misconception in the manifestation-sphere is that you can just attract things to you just through the law of attraction.
While the law of attraction is real and useful for manifestation it is not the end all be all. You have to put some sort of effort in.
Let’s go back to the example of manifesting a boyfriend.
You will be using the law of attraction naturally by thinking about it every day and putting yourself in that headspace of actually having a boyfriend.
But if you never actually put yourself out there and expose yourself to opportunities to meet him, you will never get a boyfriend.

This question really depends on your goals. Remember, you’re using affirmations to bring a desire of yours into your reality so this isn’t a one-size-fits-all type of thing.
If you desire to have more money in your life and you’re using money affirmations, that could take months or years (just being honest).
If you desire to have more patience, that could happen within the next few weeks (I’m not saying you will magically do a 180 but you can absolutely bring more patience into your life within a few weeks if you desire to do so.)
It all depends on the desire.
Another thing I have to remind you of is that you must let go of the outcome. If you’re stressing about your desire, you are actually pushing it further away from you.
Take the appropriate actions to achieve your goals and let go of the final outcome because one thing is certain: things are always going to be exactly how they’re supposed to be.

The best time for affirmations is in the morning! This is because you have no excuses in the morning, it’s the most crucial time to change your mindset, and it starts your day off on a good note and who doesn’t want to start their day off on a good note?

If you want to make your affirmations more effective then you want to 1. Use them every day at least once a day 2. Visualize before, during, or after saying them 3. Say your affirmations out loud 4. Put action behind those words 5. Don’t give up
Many people make the mistake of skipping one of these 5 steps, but let me tell you, each step is just as important as the last.

You can use affirmations all day long, but if there is no action behind it, there is no telling how long it will take for you to have what you desire. You must put action behind your words, even the smallest actions count.
