15 Good Goals To Set For Yourself
1. Be Kinder To People
Being kind is the number one goal to set for yourself because it’s universally something we all want someone to do for us.
You should always be kind to people.
Plus, being kind to people also makes you feel better too!
According to the Mayo Clinic, “Kindness can increase your sense of connectivity with others, decrease loneliness, combat low mood and improve relationships.”
Treat people the way you want to be treated and not only will it come back to you, but it will also make you happier right then and there.

2. Put More Effort Into Your Goals
As opposed to saying “be more productive” (this is a good goal but it’s not specific), a better goal to set for yourself is to put more effort into your goals, specifically 1 % each day.
I haven’t read Atomic Habits by James Clear but I have heard of his rule where you get 1% better each day.
Which I don’t know about you but that sounds very easy and very doable.
Commit to putting in at least 1% each day.
Commit to moving even when you don’t feel like it.
As opposed to giving yourself the goal of “being more productive”.
Sidenote: If you have already read this book comment down below and tell me what you thought about it. Was it as life-changing as people say it is?

3. Spend More Time With Your Family
Building a relationship with the people who you’ve either known your whole life or they’ve known you your whole life is such an incredible thing.
Friends are amazing, but it really is nothing like having a tight-knit family. Spend more time with your people, even if it’s just brunch once a month.
Now if your family is, unfortunately, toxic then I don’t suggest doing this.
I mean, I’m not saying not to ever go around your family, but what I am saying is that it is meaningless to go around people who drain you, even if you guys share some sort of DNA.
You can’t change people, and there’s no need in letting them drain your energy like that.
That doesn’t mean writing off every single person in your family either because this is easy to do. It just means don’t go around family ONLY because they’re your family.
If they’re draining and toxic, then it probably isn’t worth it, but you ultimately have to be the judge of that. I don’t know your family like you do.
4. Stay In The Present Moment
This is one of those goals that seem very simple and is a lot harder when you try it, but once you learn it, it’s something that continuously makes your life better forever.
Staying in the moment will:
- Enhance your life
- Increase your experiences and memories
- Help you earn more money
- Decrease anxiety and overthinking
- Give you your time back
5. Have More Discipline
And speaking of putting in more effort, if you want to take it a step further, then another good goal to set for yourself is having more discipline.
Is there a difference between putting in 1% more effort each day versus building better discipline?
Kind of.
They are similar, but they’re not the same. Building discipline is a notch more than putting in 1% more effort each day.
Building discipline is basically locking in, and making absolutely no excuses.
The reason why I separated the two is because not everyone needs the same thing.
Some of you may be in the place right now where you can only do 1% more, due to certain reasons.
And some of you are in the place where you can lock all the way in, or need to lock all the way in.

6. Becoming Emotionally Intelligent
Becoming emotionally intelligent is another of those good goals to set for yourself that will strengthen so many aspects of your life.
It will bring you more peace, better conversations, better relationships, and a clear mind that can weather any storm, as well as help you make better decisions.
You will literally turn into one of those people you know where you’re like “How are they so unbothered.” or “Nothing ever really gets to them”.
I’m not kidding you.
One of the best ways to become more emotionally intelligent is to put yourself in other people’s shoes.
Don’t overcomplicate this.
Notice how you handle some of your emotions with other people as if you were them and they were treating you that way. And then from there make small changes over time.

7. Stop Smoking And Vaping
I am not a health physician, but I know that smoking is bad for you, so smoking automatically makes it on the list of good goals to set for yourself.
And go ahead and quit vaping too while you’re at it.
There’s no real long-term evidence behind what vaping even does to our bodies. We are the long-term evidence! Scary, right?
Let. It. Go.
Your future self will thank you a million times over.
8. Exercise More
Exercising is not just to make you look good but it’s also to make you feel good, and not just because you lose weight.
It literally makes your brain release feel-good hormones because you worked out. So don’t just work out because summer is right around the corner.
Work out because it makes you feel good, look good, live longer, and do better in other areas.
I mean that’s a 4 for 1 deal that you can’t beat.
Personal Recommendation: I recently started doing my workouts with a YouTuber who goes by the name “Growwithjo” and she is amazing!
I’ve heard a lot of really good reviews for her and a lot of people have said they have lost a lot of weight with her workouts.
Most of her workouts are very simple, and some don’t even feel like you’re working out but boy oh boy will you feel sore the next day, let me tell you.

9. Build A Better Relationship With God
Building a relationship with God is going to fundamentally change your life.
It’s not going to look like anyone else’s relationship and walk with God either.
Many many people who go to church love to tell people how they should have a relationship with God and what they should be doing, but you read the Bible to learn what you should and shouldn’t be doing, not to tell other people what they should be doing.
Many many people also idolize the pastor or preacher at their church and this is also ill-advised.
When I say build a better relationship with God, I mean learning God for yourself.
I mean:
- Praying
- Dabbling and figuring out a good pastor on YouTube you can watch videos of
- Reading the Bible, slowly, by yourself
- Being kind to others
- Learning how to always come from a place of love
I do not mean:
- Find a local church
- Go to church every Sunday
- Judge other people for what they are or aren’t doing
- Read the Bible just to say you read to Bible or quote scriptures
- Think you are better than others
10. Stop Drinking Alcohol And/Or Sodas
Another really good goal to set for yourself is to quit drinking.
Drinking alcohol literally does nothing but damage your body, and the same can honestly be said for sodas.
If you want to live a long healthy life, then drinking alcohol regularly and in large amounts is not going to help you get there.
Learn new strategies you can use to cut out drinking alcohol and soda.
11. Be Kinder To Yourself
Being kind to yourself is one of the most important goals you can set for yourself.
Don’t give yourself excuses, but don’t torture and beat yourself up either.
Pay attention to your inner dialogue. And make sure it’s actually aligned with your goals.
If you know you want to do BIG things, then your inner dialogue needs to reflect that.
- What do you think about yourself when you’ve made a mistake?
- How do you react after you’ve made a mistake?
- What do you generally have on repeat in your mind?

12. Hold Yourself Accountable
Another one of the good goals to set for yourself is to hold yourself accountable.
Holding yourself accountable can be a healthy dose of looking at yourself in the mirror, being honest with yourself, and putting yourself in someone else’s shoes.
Holding yourself accountable is NOT being hard on yourself and beating yourself up.
You can hold yourself accountable of where you went wrong or how you can approach something better and still be kind to yourself.
Studies have even shown that those who have more self-compassion are less likely to be affected by depression and anxiety.

13. Find Productive Ways To Channel Your Emotions/Energy
Another great goal that will help you in multiple aspects of life is deciding to find better ways to channel your emotions and energy.
A lot of us tend to take out our frustration, anger, and even sadness on those around us, but this typically:
- Pushes people away
- Ruins healthy relationships
- Causes self-shame and guilt
There are better ways to express how you feel and in order to get there you first need to recognize how you channel your emotions currently (no judgment just observe).
Once you realize how you actually handle your emotions, brainstorm 3 new and healthier ways to channel your emotions.
It doesn’t have to be anything spectacular either. Some ideas include:
- Dancing
- Running
- Cooking
- Writing (word vomit whatever you’re feeling on a piece of paper)
- Taking a very long walk with nowhere to go
14. Have A Better Attitude
Having a better attitude can attract better opportunities and relationships.
When you decide that you’re going to have a good attitude, no matter what, that is something that will take you far.
Your attitude is yours to keep, literally no one can take it away from you, and it can and will make or break your life.

15. Have A Balance In Life
Last but not least, having balance in life is another good goal to set for yourself.
It’s okay if you want to get locked in and focused on your goal, but you must remember life is way more than money, fame, career, and stuff (like material things).
And besides, I hate to be the bearer of bad news but, once you get one or all of those things, you will go back to your baseline level of happiness.
That’s hedonic adaptation, baby.
We were all designed that way, so having those things in life truly will not make you happy (long-term).
It will solve your money problems, but it won’t solve your happiness problems.
But you know what will?
- Family (non-toxic)
- Friendships (non-toxic)
- Good food (not ultra-processed food)
- Rest
Strive to have balance in life, not a bunch of stuff.
What Not To Do With Your Goals
So now that we know some good goals to set for yourself this year, I want to give you some tips on what not to do.
1. Beat Yourself Up
Please please please don’t beat yourself up. If you have a habit of this, I know this will be easier said than done but it is not impossible and very necessary.
Beating yourself up is going to set you back tremendously, and I say this from personal experience.
It does absolutely no good, so try to catch yourself when you feel it coming on and be like “Nope, I’m not talking to myself like this” or “Nope, God would not want me talking to myself like this”.
If you wind up not continuing to do the goal (which many of us tend to do) don’t beat yourself up or just claim you’re incapable.
Get back up and do it again. Commit to something small right now.
2. Become Obsessed
Another thing I need you to avoid is becoming obsessed with your goals. This goes back to having balance in your life.
If you have too much of anything, it’s not going to be good.
You have to maintain a balance.
Yes your goals are important, but so is your
- Health
- Relationships
- Sleep
- Hydration
Don’t let those fall to the wayside in the hopes of achieving one or two goals.
It’s never worth it.
3. Force Other People In Your Life Do Want Your Goals
This is very easy to do, but I need you to avoid this.
When you’re starting, or continuing, your journey of improving yourself and crushing your goals, it is easy to fall into the “I want to fix everyone else I love”. No, no, no, no, no.
Don’t do this.
If you love your loved ones, then you need to love them for them, not who you want them to be.
It’s not fair to them for you to try to change them, and it’s not fair to yourself to think that you’re Iyanla I can fix your life because you’re not.
You need to focus on yourself (keep a balance with this, don’t be overly selfish).
Let your loved ones be who they are and respect that the same way you want them to respect who you are.
4. Judge Other People For Not Doing Your Goals
And lastly, I need you to avoid judging other people for not doing what you want them to do.
Everyone has a different walk in life and God has a different plan for everyone. It is not your place to judge someone for whatever it is they’re doing.
You’re not a judge, and you’re most certainly not God.
If you are a judge (hello welcome!), then I commend you for your job but I’m going to need you to keep work at work.
Let people do what they need to do.
If they’re inspired by you, great. If not, great.
Stay focused on what you have going on and, I say this with all due respect and love, mind your business.
A Reminder For Good Goals To Set For Yourself
Even though I recommend every single one of these goals on this list, the best goal to set for yourself is the one that fits your needs and current circumstances the best right now.
Don’t just set a goal because a YouTuber is doing it or because it’s something that works for someone else.
It needs to make sense for your life.
It also needs to be something that you genuinely need to work on at this moment. If you know you’re good at being patient with people but you’re not so good at being patient with yourself, don’t set a goal of being more patient with others because it’s the easiest thing to do.
Challenge yourself. Push yourself.
The whole point of finding good goals to set for yourself is to push yourself to do better and to reach a level that you haven’t once done before.
And please don’t do all of these at once, I recommend starting with one at a time.
Conclusion On Good Goals To Set For Yourself
Learning good goals to set for yourself is an awesome thing to do, but it means nothing if you don’t take what you’ve learned from this article and apply it in day-to-day life.
Take action, and do one small thing a day that gets you closer to your smaller and bigger goals.
Will it be a walk in the park? Most days no. Will it be worth it? Absolutely.
You deserve happiness and success in your life and the only way to do so is by setting realistic goals that suit your needs and desires AND taking action on a consistent basis.
That’s why I recommend doing one small thing a day. If you do more that day, then great. If you don’t, then at least you took a tiny step in the right direction.
