Best Way To Use Journal Prompts For Couples

There isn’t a right or wrong way to do this per se; however, there is a more efficient way to use couples journal prompts. So I’m going to share with you what works best and how my partner and I did this.

Again, you don’t have to do it this way but I’ve found that this works best in comparison to some of the other methods we’ve tried (which I will share at the end of this section).

1. Don’t Do Too Many At Once

It’s very easy to get excited and want to do a bunch of couples journal prompts at once, but you have to be careful doing this because it can quickly lead to being overwhelmed.

Try to starting out with 1-2 prompts (3 maximum) and go from there. Remember, this is not a race and you don’t have to do them all at once.

It’s best to start off small because it gives you more time and space to go into depth on some of these questions.

You can always come back and do more later on.

2. Set Aside Time To Do This

Setting aside time to use journal prompts for couples can really give you the space you need to think about and/or expand on your answer.

And it doesn’t have to be anything crazy in the beginning; you can start with 10-15 minutes.

3. Write Your Answers Individually

One thing I found that really helped me was answering them separately and then discussing what we wrote together. Initially, we tried writing them completely separately (on different days), but then we would wind up never getting back to it.

I’m not saying this would happen to you, but for us every time we tried it that way we always forgot about it later.

Writing them down together (like collabing on answers) isn’t really as beneficial either because it’s not giving you space to focus on how you want to respond and how you feel.

So I’d say the best way to use journal prompts for couples is to set aside time together (10+ minutes), write your answers on different pieces of paper, and once both of y’all are done, come together to see what the other person wrote and talk about it.

4. Remember Not To Judge The Other Person’s Answers

Out of all the steps we just went over, this one is the most important. Please, please, please remind yourself not to judge your partner’s answers, and yes this is so much easier said than done.

Doing this is supposed to be something that brings you closer together, not further apart, so you guys both have to create a safe space for each other.

Try to keep an open mind and put yourself in the other person’s shoes.

Listen to understand, don’t listen to respond.

Tips For Using Journal Prompts For Couples

1. Agree On A Time

I recommend in the morning on a day when you guys are both off from work or in the evening on a pretty chill day.

I don’t recommend doing these journal prompts on a day when one of you has been a bit annoyed or tired throughout the day because that may spill over into the journaling sesh.

You also don’t have to do these every day; I honestly suggest doing these once or twice a week max. I personally do this once every other week and sometimes once a month.

2. Be Committed

This won’t work if you’re both not committed. What does it mean to be committed to this? Be honest, and accountable, and show up for yourself and your partner.

What if your partner isn’t committed? I will answer this in the next section.

3. Make Some Tea

I highly recommend making a nice cup of hot tea or hot cocoa before diving into these journal prompts for couples.

Get relaxed, unwind, and let your thoughts flow!

4. Just Write

If/when you don’t know what to say just write something down. The things you need to get off your chest will come to you as you’re writing.

Even if you can’t decide what to write in the beginning just write the first thing that comes to mind, eventually what you really want to say will come to you, I promise.

5. Be Patient

Couples journaling can either go really really smooth or not so smooth at all. That’s because some questions are a bit light and others are heavier.

On those days when you’re tackling some of the heavier questions, be patient with not only each other but yourself.

You may:

Not know how to answer the question initially
Feel a way you didn’t expect
Hear something you weren’t expecting to hear
Hear something you don’t want to hear
Have to swallow a hard truth

All of those things require patience.

Is it a bit of work? Yes. But is it worth it? Absolutely.

6. Don’t Forget To Have Fun

Make sure you have fun with your journaling prompts for couples. You don’t always have to do the tougher or reflective questions; sometimes it’s better just to have fun with it and ask each other questions.

You can even make a date night out of it and do a couple’s game with it!

7. Give Yourself The Space To Answer The Question Honestly

It’s not only important that you’re giving your partner a safe space but that you give yourself a safe space as well.

Don’t worry about what your partner may think about your answer; allow yourself to be completely honest about how you feel.

It’s okay to feel the way you feel because you feel that way for a reason. It’s okay to have a preference that is different from what your partner wants.

You are still individuals at the end of the day who have your own needs/wants, and that’s completely okay.

8. Remember, Don’t Judge Your Partner’s Answer

Don’t criticize, condemn, or complain about your partner’s answer. Just listen to understand.

And don’t overthink it either. Keep it simple, and remember you’re doing this to see each other’s side and get to a common ground.

If a problem arises, remember it’s not you against your partner; it’s you two against the problem.

What If Your Partner Isn’t Committed/Thinks It’s Silly?

1. Share The Benefits

If you share with your partner that you want to start using journal prompts for couples and they say they’re not interested then sharing the benefits of journaling may be helpful.

2. Be Open About How Important It Is To You

Don’t be afraid to be vocal about how important this is to you. There are times in the relationship where both parties take turns compromising.

3. Start Off Small (One To Start)

Typically presenting a smaller goal helps people to be more likely to agree or commit to it.

Try out one journal prompt a month or position it as couples questions rather than couples journal prompts. You can also settle for talking through the questions rather than writing them down in the beginning.

Sometimes it’s easier for people to say yes to something when you make it seem as low effort as possible. Then once they have a taste of it, offer another idea such as writing down the answers next time.

4. Don’t Be Too Pushy

If none of these steps above work and they just don’t want to do it then you have to respect their decision. We can’t force people to do something they don’t want to do, ultimately.

You can try to maybe bring it up at a later time to see how they feel but if they say no then it’s a no.
