If you’ve been struggling with making the perfect vision board, I’ve got you covered. In this guide, I will break down:
- What you may want to include on your vision board
- How to make a digital vision board
- How to make a physical vision board
- Pro tips on how to make a vision board
So let’s get right into my straightforward step-by-step guide on how to make a vision board without magazines.
Things To Include When You Create Your Vision Board
You don’t have to include all of these categories but this is just a list to get a good idea of what you want.
You can choose one category and have a theme to your vision board or you can choose multiple things to add. I chose multiple categories, all of them to be specific.
- Health goals
- Financial goals
- Relationship goals (romantic, platonic, and family)
- Long-term goals
- Homes
- Travel
- Adventurous things you want to try
How To Make A Digital Vision Board
Digital vision boards are the most popular way to create vision boards. They’re easier and more affordable in comparison to printing the pictures off.
It also takes less time and effort to make a vision board this way.
The only downside to making a digital vision board is that it is smaller and you may not look at it as much as you would if it was on your wall in your room or office space.
But the Pros still definitely outweigh the Cons on this one.
- Choose your photos on a free stock photo site such as Canva
- I suggest around 11-15 but you can do more if you’d like
- If you need some inspiration check out some “Vision Board Pics” on Pinterest
- Go to Canva if you weren’t already in Canva
- If you don’t have an account it is free to sign up
- Select “Create Design” in the top right corner and choose “Desktop Wallpaper” which should be about 1920×1080
- If it doesn’t fit you can resize it
- If you want to resize it you just have to choose “Resize” in the top left corner
- You have to already be in the photo that you want to resize to see this option
- Place your photos to your liking
- Save as a JPEG or PNG
- JPEG (typically smaller; easier to store and share)
- PNG (typically higher quality; used for illustrations and graphics)
- I suggest the PNG
- Place the vision board wherever you like. Resize as needed
- You can also print this vision board, laminate it, and hang it up
How To Create A Vision Board With A Blackboard
Although digital vision boards are more popular, I actually preferred creating my vision board this way. It’s also what I think of when I think of making one.
This way may take longer but it’s more fun and meaningful. You can create it by yourself with some good music in the background or you can create it with other people. You can even make a whole vision board party if you’re up for it.
Anyway, here’s how I made my vision board.
- Find pictures that inspire you on a free stock photo site
- I suggest doing roughly a mix of about 6=80/20 with 80=pictures and 20=words or quotes
- Save those images to your device
- I suggest saving anywhere from 25-50 pictures depending on how big you want your vision board (I will explain more detail in a minute)
- Print them off
- I printed mine off at CVS but there are other places I’m sure you could do this like:
- Staples
- Walgreens
- Walmart
- It cost under $17 for 50 pictures for me. And again you don’t have to do 50 I just suggest anywhere between 25-30
- I printed mine off at CVS but there are other places I’m sure you could do this like:
- Buy 2 floppy blackboards
- I bought mine from the Dollar Store but I’m sure you can buy this anywhere
- You can also do this on 1 floppy blackboard as well. This is where you’d use about 25 photos instead of 50
- The board also doesn’t have to be black that’s just what I chose
- Also, buy:
- Tape (I prefer double-sided tape)
- Scissors
- Thumbtacks or something to put the vision board up
- Tape your pictures to the blackboard on a flat surface or the floor
- I did this on the floor but I’m sure you could do this on a table too
Pro Tip: Place your pictures on your vision board BEFORE you tape them. I suggest you arrange your pictures exactly how you want them and glue them on one by one
7. Put your vision board up, stand back, and admire your work of art
Pro Tips On How To Make A Vision Board Without Magazines
- Cut up some quotes to make your vision board a bit more dynamic
- Or make some photos/quotes smaller on your digital vision board
- Include both short and long-term goals for your pictures
- I recommend saving more pictures than you intend to use just in case you decide you may not like certain pictures when you go back and look at them to print them
- Don’t overthink too much on your pictures. If you don’t like them you can always change them out. I changed a few pictures on my vision board a few weeks after I made it
- I got my inspiration from Pinterest. It is also an option to download images from Pinterest to your phone.
- My pictures (the ones on the top of both blackboards) do kind of hang off so if you don’t want this I suggest using less than 50 pictures for 2 blackboards (2 of the pictures were cut smaller for quotes so it’s really 48 full-size photos)
- Place the tape along a good portion of all 4 sides of the pictures so it doesn’t peel up
- This is also why I suggest using double-sided tape because it makes that process so much easier
- The blackboard doesn’t have to be floppy but I do suggest the floppy ones if you’re going to tack them in the wall because it’s easier that way
- If you’re curious to know, my photos were a mix of:
- travel
- love
- quotes
- future goals I want to hit
- aesthetic photos
- adventurous things I want to do
- and a few pics of future homes I want
